Posted on December 18, 2021August 13, 2022 by That's the Way It Was

Thin – Balding – Awkward – Ungainly. A chain smoker who would use sticky tape to put padding on his elbows and knees. These are some of the adjectives and phrases used to describe a man who will remain in the history books of Rugby League for eternity.

Brian Bevan served in the Royal Australian Navy as a stoker. He served on the corvettes Katoomba and Bundaberg and the cruiser Australia.
Warrington won their first Challenge Cup in 1950 by defeating Widnes 19-0. The town celebrated with captain Harry Bath (left), Mayor William Higham and Brian Bevan (right).
There was a statue, a commemorative wall and in 1995, to celebrate the Centenary of Rugby League, the Royal Mail issued a series of stamps. Brian Bevan, Harold Wagstaff, Jim Sullivan, Billy Batten and Gus Risman were the players chosen to honour the game.
